One of my favorite qualities that I learned from my father is grit. I am so grateful every day for that. In 1996, when I designed a planet made of hearts, I also invented the Heart Pictionary--a new language, made of hearts, with character education words and positive concepts. I knew that hearts already evoke positive feelings, but I wanted to add a layer of meanings, and to instill concepts that we didn't have words for. I created words for "good intentions" and a holiday where they celebrate good intentions on Planet Heart, and another holiday to celebrate the self... I made words relate visually other words on purpose, sometimes by sharing the same design or a related design so we can discuss concepts and why they might relate to one another. The image that means school is the same that means treasure. But back to grit: the image (Pictionary word) that means tree grows into the image that means "try hard" which then grows into the word for grit, which then is very similar to the image for "almost achieve after hard work" and finally "achieve after hard work."
I finally self-published the book around 2010, but I have added more words to it so it needs an update. In 1996, I dreamed that kids would hand write letters to each other using this language. Now, with the new technology, I have updated my dreams. But grit is what keeps me going. I know I want that to be my legacy for my daughters.
